Facial recognition has been around since the 1960s, but recent advances in machine learning have improved accuracy to the point where new applications have become viable and the technology has reemerged as an ecosystem to watch. Many applications are consumer-facing, from unlocking smartphones to making bank transactions, but the technology could also become a workhorse in safety and security, scanning streams of surveillance footage for suspicious persons or activities. Goldman Sachs Research’s Gabriela Borges explains the potential.

When we think about breaches in cybersecurity, 85% are caused by stolen and compromised credentials. If we implement facial recognition technology correctly, we may limit the amount of money that's lost.
