My Summer at Goldman Sachs: Hunter

25 OCT 2017

Hunter joined Goldman Sachs for a 10-week Summer Associate Internship in Private Wealth Management this past summer. He shares some insights below.

BIO:

  • Attending graduate school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Internship: Investment Management Division in Private Wealth Management (PWM)

ABOUT HIS INTERNSHIP:

  • 3 weeks of training, 7 weeks working with teams across PWM floor
  • Projects included an investment strategy deep dive and a client pitch that ran in conjunction with extra support for individual PWM teams

MOST SURPRISING PART OF THE SUMMER INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE:
“What I found very surprising was the level of access we had to senior management at the firm. We were fortunate enough to hear Lloyd Blankfein speak and offer career insights and advice. Some of us were able to meet with the Head of Investor Relations, Dane Holmes. It speaks to how flat Goldman is as an organization and how much senior management values the interns.”

PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT OVER THE SUMMER:
“I think gaining the trust of a full-time employee was a big win for me because demonstrating competence and aptitude in such a condensed period of time is a difficult task. When you can do it, I think it is incredibly gratifying and rewarding. When a full-time employee can say, 'Hey, can you handle this, could you take over this?' and you kind of own a process from beginning to end, it’s truly an accomplishment and it’s what the summer interns should be aspiring to.”

ADVICE FOR FUTURE INTERNS:
“Keep in mind that everything you’re doing is impactful to the advisors you’re working for, to the clients, to the support staff, so you should feel integrated very quickly.”
