2017 Recruiter Recap
As we look forward to meeting more students on campus this upcoming year, we asked our campus recruiters from around the globe to share their favorite event of 2017 along with their best advice for student attendees.
Recruiter: Katrina, Associate, University Relations
Event: Frozen Yogurt Bar
“We hosted three ‘build your own’ healthy frozen yogurt bar events in November. Despite the chilly weather, the response was great—we had a line for the ‘froyos’!” - Katrina
The events were for students at University of Warwick, Imperial College and University College London. Graduate recruiters and campus ambassadors were there, talking to students about our recruitment process, internships and experiences at the firm. “It was the first time we’ve hosted outdoor events—it was a convenient way to catch up with students in an informal setting,” says Katrina.
Katrina’s advice: “While an event is a great way for students to find out more about potential internship or graduate opportunities, it’s also a chance to get one on one time with a potential employer. Make sure you prepare before attending — be ready to talk about why you would make a great employee. Even if it’s only during a quick chat over ‘froyo’!”
Recruiter: Lade, Vice President, Engineering Recruiter
Location: New York City
“There was a strong Goldman Sachs presence at the event. We were really excited by the number of students we were able to engage with at our table.” - Lade
Internapalooza is a conference for interns, young engineers, and STEM students around the world. Students come for the chance to meet with technology focused companies and network with like-minded interns. We attended Internapalooza for the first time with several recruiters and Engineers representing Goldman Sachs. Our presence at the conference was featured in Bloomberg.
Lade’s advice: “Candidates should show up enthusiastic and ready to know more about the cutting edge technologies within financial services. There are so many career opportunities within FinTech that are equally as challenging as those in Silicon Valley.”
Recruiter: Melissa, Vice President, APAC Recruiter
Event: Community TeamWorks (CTW) with Singapore University Students
“Positive feedback was received from both our invited undergraduates – who were excited to be part of the firm’s hallmark CTW initiative and interact with our employees; as well as beneficiaries from Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS) – who had an enriching and educational afternoon learning about marine life at the aquarium.” - Melissa
Our Singapore office hosted undergraduate students from four local universities at a summer CTW project with Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS). The group accompanied 50 MINDS beneficiaries and their caregivers to the S.E.A. Aquarium on Sentosa Island. We are the only investment bank in Singapore to offer an opportunity like this.
Melissa’s advice: “I recommend you have basic industry knowledge prior to the event so that you are in a better position to be able to talk about current affairs and trends. At the event, it’s good to make the most of your opportunity by establishing a personal rapport with representatives that you meet. Showing interest in the professionals, their roles and their experiences to date can go a long way.”
WOMEN EMERGING IN FINANCE
Recruiter: Shradha, Vice President, Campus Recruiting
Event: Women Emerging in Finance
“The event was meant to inspire and encourage women across leading Engineering and Business schools to explore a career in the financial industry.”- Shradha
In January, we hosted the second annual Women Emerging in Finance event. There was a really positive response from the students who all received opportunities to interact with women in senior positions as well as other professionals from the Bengaluru office.
The positive response from participants was definitely a highlight, as well as some new elements from this year, including the launch of a mentorship component to the program where women students were aligned to GS employees from various divisions for a period of six months. The need for a diversity dialogue across schools is very important and one that has evolved over the year. We are now working towards including students that are men as part of this program to help encourage their advocacy.
Shrada’s Advice: “Be curious, ask questions and take away learnings that help you align your interests with your career aspirations.”
