Environmental Markets

As a part of our Environmental Policy Framework, Goldman Sachs committed up to $1 billion for investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. By the end of 2008, we surpassed that goal and invested over $2.5 billion in clean technology such as renewable energy and energy efficiency projects around the world.

One of the more recent renewable energy investments is the February 2009 acquisition of Sunray Energy, Inc. by Cogentrix, a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs. Sunray is the owner and operator of the first two utility-scale solar trough plants built in the world. In addition to utility-scale solar, Cogentrix is developing run-of-river hydroelectric projects in Turkey and wind energy in Puerto Rico. It has also made strategic investments in solar photovoltaic cell manufacturers Suniva and SpectraWatt, as well as in smart-grid company GridPoint.

Some of the other sectors that Goldman Sachs has invested in include:

Cellulosic Ethanol:

Iogen Corporation

Sustainable Real Estate:

Bond Companies

Geothermal Power:

U.S. Geothermal Inc.

Wind Power:

Solar Photovoltaic Power:
