Eric Kandel: The Science of Memory

Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist Dr. Eric Kandel, co-director of the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute at Columbia University, discusses the science of learning and memory.

On the connection between learning and memory: “Learning and memory are the two most magical qualities of the mind. Learning is the process whereby you acquire new information of the world, and memory is the process whereby you retain that knowledge over time.”

On memory and identity: “Most of our skills and the knowledge we have about the world are not built into our brain, but learned. As a result of this knowledge built over a lifetime, we are who we are because of what we’ve learned and what we remember.”
