50 Outstanding Young Leaders from Around the World

The Goldman Sachs Foundation In Partnership With The Institute Of International Education (IIE) Recognize 50 Outstanding Young Leaders From Around The World

University Students Receive Top Honors for Academic Achievement and Leadership Skills at the Global Leadership Institute in New York.

NEW YORK – Fifty outstanding college students from 22 countries around the globe have been selected to participate in the prestigious Goldman Sachs Global Leadership Institute, which begins on July 13 in New York City.

They have earned their places in the Global Leadership Program through a combination of remarkable extracurricular contributions and outstanding academic accomplishments. Among some of their accomplishments: establishing a medical camp for children in rural South Africa, working with victims of child prostitution in Southeast Asia, and analyzing and supporting efforts to diminish the effects of political imbalances in educational institutions in the Balkans.

The Institute brings together these future leaders for a week of seminars and practical training and is designed to help students enhance leadership skills, increase awareness of global issues, and prepare for distinctive service to society and their future professions, while networking across cultures. Institute sessions include a leadership workshop led by Morehouse College, an international panel examining the roots of terrorism and its eradication, finance and public policy leadership workshops by faculty from University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business, and international business seminars led by senior Goldman Sachs executives. Highly regarded leaders from education, business, nonprofit, international relations, and humanitarian organizations will address these students as part of the curriculum for the program. Mark Malloch Brown, administrator of the United Nations Development Programme and chairman of the UN Development Group will deliver the keynote address at the Global Leadership Institute awards ceremony on July 18th. Cultural activities include a Broadway play, a tour of Manhattan, and swing dancing at Lincoln Center.

"The Global Leaders Program strives to recognize the achievements of outstanding college and university students worldwide and to contribute effectively to their training and preparation as future leaders," said Stephanie Bell-Rose, President of The Goldman Sachs Foundation. "With training and support, these inspired young people and others like them can shape a better world for all of us, as they assume positions of leadership in their respective countries."

The Global Leadership Program was created in partnership with the Institute of International Education (IIE), the leading not-for-profit international education organization. This spring, IIE and The Goldman Sachs Foundation recognized 100 highly accomplished second-year university students as Goldman Sachs Global Leaders at awards ceremonies around the world. From these 100 winners, 50 were selected on the basis of additional interviews and essays to attend the Goldman Sachs Global Leadership Institute.

"The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program is a tremendous investment in preparing the next generation to address pressing global issues," said Allan E. Goodman, President and CEO of the Institute of International Education. "The opportunity to forge relationships and share ideas across borders that this program offers will prepare these extremely talented young people to become the kind of leaders of governments and societies upon which ultimate success in the wars against poverty, disease and terrorism will depend."

The Goldman Sachs Foundation is an independent nonprofit grantmaking organization funded by The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. The mission of the Foundation is to promote excellence and innovation in education and to improve the academic performance and lifelong productivity of young people worldwide.
