I’m currently meeting with business leaders in the Investment Banking Division (IBD) to discuss high level issues around their loss history and events occurring in the industry. This assignment gives me direct contact with the key decision makers and leaders of IBD and allows me to see the big picture of where their business is headed, as well as understand the issues that are deemed critical by senior management.

Even though I am not directly engaged in the day-to-day business activities of the areas I support, I am expected to have a macro view of what they do and their processes. I gain this knowledge on the job. For example, when I investigate and uncover the causes of losses, I also learn about that business area. To further supplement my knowledge, I enroll in learning series and classes provided by Goldman Sachs University.

Aside from providing valuable services to our business, I know that I am also contributing to the legacy of Operational Risk both within the firm and in the industry. When Operational Risk is a more mature area, I hope to recognize certain aspects where I have personally made a difference in shaping the path toward steady-state.
