When I was in school studying economics and political science I considered many career options, including jobs in finance. I wanted a place where I could continue to put my analytical skills to work, regardless of the industry. It turned out that Goldman Sachs was the perfect place. Every day I am aware of what’s going on around the world. I can understand how the different markets affect each other and I get to come up with the best way for our clients to position themselves in the current environment.

When I first joined as a summer analyst, I discovered that many of the professionals on the floor have similar liberal arts backgrounds like me. With plenty of training opportunities and mentors available, every person at the firm has the potential to excel as long as they have the right mindset and a passion for what they do.

For those who are considering a career in finance, be creative and think outside the box. You may not have a finance degree but you should identify your strengths and realize that your unique background can add great value to the team. Talk to as many people as you can to gain knowledge about the industry. This will help you discover how your skill set can fit into specific roles and ultimately, will make your job more rewarding and enjoyable.
