After finishing high school, I travelled around Australia and Japan for a year. Afterwards, I studied business at ESB Reutlingen (European School of Business) and Dublin City University. I did my first internships in the automotive industry. However, I was influencing just a small piece of the company and was not able to contribute significant improvements. I decided to go into consulting and really liked working with a strong client focus. However, I missed the analytical, numerical side of business. Finally, I decided to do an internship in investment banking as it combined everything I was looking for.
I would advise those who are considering a career in investment banking to do an internship in this sector. The working hours are hard, and you don’t know if you’ll be up for it until you try. Talk to people in the business, especially friends or colleagues from the same university. They can tell you the truth about investment banking. It can be rather strenuous at times, but there is so much you get in return. It is a great experience – you not only learn a lot but also meet great people.
