Ten years ago I certainly didn’t expect to be where I am now. I never imagined I’d be working at a firm like Goldman Sachs because I just didn’t think they would recruit someone who had never worked in the banking industry before. My career route has morphed quite a bit over the years and I have transitioned from external audit to internal audit to forensic investigations to anti-money laundering work, and now back to internal audit.
My best bit of advice for someone considering a career in the industry is to do a lot of research on the areas you are interested in and that you believe will compliment your skill set - Goldman Sachs has a very wide range of opportunities covering many different disciplines so it’s a good idea to do your homework and think about what suits you. My other piece of advice is understand the work atmosphere and the culture – if you have never worked in the finance industry before you should be prepared to expect an intense yet highly challenging and motivating environment. Speak to anyone you know working in the industry and ask for honest feedback on what they believe will suit you in the long run.
