Looking back, I can say that I always knew I would be working in this field. I pursued an undergraduate degree in finance and banking with a heavy financial engineering course load. I started my career ten years ago as a foreign exchange and money market trader in Romania. Honestly, I didn’t even know that Goldman Sachs existed at that time. Most of our trading partners were European, Middle-Eastern, Russian, and Israeli banks.
When you begin your journey in finance, like any other field, you have to know the lingo. You have to learn the products to be able to understand what is actually going on. However, as you move past the techniques, you will come to realize that it is the knowledge of Main Street, common sense and clear vision that sets you aside from the pack. You need to be curious and innovative and challenge status quo. You have to pay attention to details and get comfortable that you covered all scenarios. These qualities will make you valuable.
