Day to day, my key activities include fundamental research, financial modelling, company visits, written and verbal communications with internal (e.g. sales, trading) and external (e.g. mutual funds, hedge funds, private equity) clients.
My current assignment is to strengthen and expand our research footprint and reputation for Great China utilities. We are constantly looking for fresh investment opportunities across the regions for our clients.
The most rewarding part of my job is when our clients profit from our stock picks. We strive to become their trusted advisors – to be their first point of contact when they have questions on their investments. The value of our research is crystallized only when we can turn words on paper into real investment opportunities.
On the flip side, definitely the most challenging part of my job is when our investment thesis does not work out the way we expected. Then it is time to see what went against our analysis and hypothesis. The ability to learn from experience and maintain humility is critical to the success of a research analyst.
