Merchant Banking/Private Equity Associate, Infrastructure Group, London

My Work

I work on the Goldman Sachs’ global infrastructure fund(GSIP I) in the Merchant Banking division. It’s a private equity fund focused on essential assets such as utilities, airports, roads, bridges and tunnels. My responsibility lies primarily in valuing companies as leveraged buyout (LBO) candidates, developing business plans, negotiating financing packages and managing lawyers, accountants and investment bankers who support us on our M&A and refinancing transactions. Although Infrastructure sounds like a narrow industry, it actually offers a lot of variety and geographical breadth.

I think opportunities abound here. I started my career in the Structured & Principal Finance group, which is part of the Investment Banking division, and after just 18 months I had the opportunity to move into the private equity business.

All our projects are team-based, involving internal people and external advisors. However, this does not mean there is no scope for individual work. While our MD is overseeing the project, responsibilities are clearly assigned to individual team members, but the VP also makes sure that everyone gets exposed to all elements of a transaction.
