I had intended to pursue a career in medicine after my enlistment in the military; however I had a commander in the military at the time who advised me to consider opportunities in the business world, specifically in finance or accounting. When my enlistment was completed, I followed his advice and enrolled at the City University of New York at Brooklyn. I also worked full time at Brinks, a security company, while attending school. After graduation, I joined the public accounting sector in New York. While in accounting, I focused on investment management companies and joined Goldman Sachs soon thereafter.
When I first joined Goldman Sachs, I realized immediately that I was in an intellectually stimulated environment. However, it took some time to acclimate to the firm’s culture, to really understand the people, and to build my network. In the early years within Internal Audit, we engaged in much more consultative services than audits. My first role was conducting audits and advisory work within Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM) in the Americas, where I got an opportunity to really learn the business. GSAM was just newly developing and it was a great learning experience to grow along with the business. My role has expanded since then to now include both PWM and GSAM.
