Goldman Sachs’ business with Europe started back in 1897, when the firm accessed the European credit markets and became a commercial paper dealer for our first Europe-based client. In 1970, Goldman Sachs opened its first international office in London, at St. Alban’s House, Goldsmith Street, with just five employees. By March 1973, the largest area of the firm was the Equities department (then known as Securities Sales), with eight employees. The firm also had professionals representing Fixed Income, International Arbitrage and a Corporate Finance/Syndicate department, bringing the London headcount up to 24. As the 1980s progressed, it became clear that our three London office locations could not accommodate the growing number of employees and increasingly sophisticated technology needed to serve our expanding client base in the UK and Europe. In early 1991, the firm opened its new offices on Fleet Street, becoming the European headquarters for the firm. The UK firm now employs over 5,000 people, providing a full range of services to corporations, financial institutions, governments and wealthy individuals.
