Michael Sherwood Shares Career Insights

Michael Sherwood, vice chairman of Goldman Sachs and co-CEO of Goldman Sachs International, discusses his career, leadership and the firm’s culture and values. The remarks below were made during a session with summer interns last year in London:

On his Career at Goldman Sachs
“The things that attracted me to Goldman Sachs 28 years ago are the same things that attract people to the firm to this day – an entrepreneurial culture and a fast-paced environment in an exciting sector. These are still the characteristics that I love most about the organisation.”

On Leadership
“Working my way up through the firm, from junior analyst to partner level, over a long period of time, has made me a better leader – because I have experienced life at Goldman Sachs at every level, through the highs as well as the lows.

One of my greatest responsibilities as a leader at the firm is to continually reinforce our culture and ensure that people who grow up in the organisation understand it. We recruit outstanding people, but once they are on board, it is the responsibility of the leaders at Goldman Sachs to convey the culture and values of the firm to them. This is absolutely critical.”

On Goldman Sachs Culture and Values
“The Goldman Sachs culture is all about the ability to do the best for your client, to work well in a team, and to perpetuate the success and the values of the firm over a long period of time. We're on a journey where we're continually trying to make the firm better and better. But at the same time, you have to remember the principles that got us to where we are today. And as we go into new geographies and build new businesses, we're taking on all sorts of new clients and new employees that have very different backgrounds. It is vital that they understand the fabric of the firm and its values.”
